On  Monday, 18th July 2022, the Senate convened in the Chambers of the National Assembly for a Special Sitting. The meeting began at 9:05 A.M. with the Belize National Prayer by Senator Antonio Herrera. There was then the Oath of Allegiance of temporary Senators, Jacklyn Burns, being the alternate for Senator Michael Peyrefitte, and  Senator Phillip Willoughby, alternate for Senator Beverly Williams. There was also the Oath of Allegiance for temporary Senator Luis Martinez, alternate for Senator Elena Smith, however, that took place almost nearing the end of the meeting.

On the Orders of the Day were the following:

Bills brought from the House of Representatives. 

  1. Public Sector Emoluments and Allowances Reduction (Amendment) Bill, 2022.
  2. Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters (Amendment) Bill, 2022.
  3. Belizean Nationality (Amendment) Bill, 2022.
  4. Defamation Bill, 2022.
  5. Married Persons (Protection) (Amendment) Bill, 2022.
  6. Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Bill, 2022.
  7. General Revenue Supplementary Appropriation (No. 1) (2022/2023) Bill, 2022.

Senator Willoughby asked for a division on the General Revenue Supplementary Appropriation (No. 1) (2022/2023) Bill, 2022. The results were eight (8) Senators voted “Yes”; three (3) Senators voted “No” and two (2) Senator were absent. The above mentioned Bills were taken through all their stages forthwith, except for the Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Bill, 2022, that was withheld in Committee.

No. 28/1/14    –            Supplementary Appropriation (No.1) Schedule for Fiscal Year 2022/2023.

No. 29/1/14    –            Central Bank of Belize Fortieth Annual Report and Statement of Accounts for the Year Ending 31st December 2021.

The above mentioned two (2) Papers were ordered to lie on the Table.

Motions    

  1. Central American Bank for Economic Integration – Expansion and Rehabilitation of the Philip Goldson Highway Loan Motion, 2022.
  2. Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) – Loan Commitment Under Bilateral Cooperation Program (US$75,000,000) Loan Motion, 2022.

The above mentioned two (2) Motions were adopted.
