On Friday, 17th November 2017, at 10:00 A.M, the National Assembly of Belize got a school visit from the Saint Joseph Roman Catholic School from Belize City. Approximately 100 students, 6 teachers and 11 parents were present at the visit. Due to the size of the group, the students were separated into two groups.
The first group was greeted by Ms. Mary August and Ms. Ingrid Soriano in the lobby of the National Assembly. They were then escorted up and were seated in the galleries where the meetings of the House of Representatives (Lower House) and the Senate (Upper House) are held. They were then given a brief description of the historical background of the National Assembly.
The students were also given a brief history of the significant role that the Mace plays in the sitting of the House of Representatives. According to Standing Order 6(1) of the House the Mace is “The symbol of the dignity and authority of the House entrusted by it to the Speaker.”
During the tour, students were given the opportunity to ask questions that they had pertaining to the information shared to them. All questions were answered.
