National Assembly Hosts Children’s Parliament
On Wednesday, 20th November 2019, the National hosted Belize’s First National Children’s Parliament. The Children’s Parliament comprises of young students from all over the country representing the 31 constituencies in Belize. The Special Sitting of the Children’s Parliament convened at 10:00 A.M. commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. At the commencement, Dr. Senator Carla Barnett, Vice-President of the Senate, on behalf of the Hon. Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, gave a short opening statement welcoming the young parliamentarians on the special occasion.
The agenda of the day highlighted a single Motion entitled: Implementation of the Rights of the Child in Education, Health, and Safety and Protection Motion, 2019. The Motion was presented by the young Honourable Alexandria Fermin, as Prime Minister and thereafter each young parliamentarian gave their powerful and passionate plea to the government on the matter as it relates to the youths in their constituency relating to education, health, and safety and protection of children in Belize. The motion was later adopted, and the meeting was adjourned.
Thereafter the young parliamentarians invited the Members of Parliament that were present during the Sitting to join them in the Chamber for a photo opp.
