Today, Wednesday, 7th July 2021, a Special Sitting of the Senate was held in the Chambers of the National Assembly Building, in Belmopan. The meeting opened with the Belizean Prayer by the Honourable Madam President, followed by the swearing in of Senator Darrell Bradley who is filling the vacancy for the post that Senator Khalid Belisle once held. As well there was the swearing in of two temporary Senators, which were Senator Shary Medina, alternate for Senator Sheena Pitts and Senator Ashton McKenzie, alternate for Senator Michael Peyrefitte.
The Honourable Eamon Courtenay, Leader of Government Business, made a statement by Minister extending his condolences to Haiti on the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. A moment of silence was observed.
On the days agenda was one (1) Bill brought from the House of Representatives, the Governor-General (Conditions of Service) (Amendment) Bill, 2021. As well there was the Finance and Audit (Reform) (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which was brough for Second Reading. Both Bills passed the Senate, however, the Finance and Audit (Reform) (Amendment) Bill, 2021, passed with amendments.
There was one (1) Paper that was ordered to lie on the Table, Sessional Paper No. 10/1/14 – Contract Agreements for Philip Goldson Highway and Remate Bypass: Upgrading Project Lots 1, 2, 3 and 4, and Caracol Road Upgrading Project – Lot 1C. Also, one (1) Motion was adopted which was the Resolution to amend the Schedule to the Governor-General (Conditions of Service) Act, Chapter 7 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2011, Motion, 2021.
